Not all sports are started here in th United States! One theory is that the term “tennis” derives from the French “tenez”, meaning to hold or to take heed, i.e. from server to receiver.   “Tenez” may have been a common call for jeu de paume players to initiate play in France and somehow retained association to the English versions of the game.  Additionally, in times preceding jeu de paume where early ball games have been documented there was an Egyptian city named 'Tinnis'.

Wrestling

 HES DOWN!

 Not many girls wrestle but it is a very interesting sport! Wrestling is an ancient sport. Egyptian slabs, dating from perhaps 3000 BC, picture wrestlers using many of the same holds that wrestlers use today. In the ‘Iliad', Homer wrote of a great wrestling match in which Odysseus defeated Ajax for the shield of the slain Achilles. Wrestling was featured in the Olympic Games of ancient Greece.

Baseball takes us all theay way back in history! Jackie Robinson became the first African-American Major League Baseball player in 1947 could help them learn about how Southern states prohibited African-Americans from voting, schools and restaurants for decades. "Jackie Robinson: A Biography" and many historians believe Robinson and baseball's integration were crucial factors in the South's integration. Children should also learn about the defunct Negro leagues, which had many future Hall of Famers including Paige in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

Basketball is a sport that Indiana was known for! We have had many fabulous basketball athletes come from Indiana! One of the greatest basketball players in Larry Bird!

-Larry Bird was born December 7, 1956 in West Baden, Indiana. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics after his junior year at Indiana State (1978) but did not play professionally until the 1979–1980 season. Over the course of his 13 seasons with the Celtics, he cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players in NBA history. He retired in 1993 and became head coach of the Indiana Pacers in 1997.
